Our Walking Dead Tale
Have you ever wondered how others became such big fans of The Walking Dead?
I do.
That is why I am developing this website and a place for us to talk to you, the fans of The Walking Dead, to find out who you are, why you love this franchise so much, and what makes this fandom more than a group of walking dead enthusiasts but more like a family.
Our Walking Dead Tale
In 2010, like many, I had read/heard of a new show being made for television based on the Walking dead comic book written by Robert Kirkman. Being a genre fan for many years with a hobby in makeup fx this was going to be THE show to watch. Having seen issues of the comic book at my local comic shop, I decided it was time to begin reading them, there was no turning back. Devouring the written content in preparation for the show, I quickly found how much more there was to the characters and story of the Walking Dead. It was so much more than just a zombie hack fest.
Following the story of Rick Grimes and the survivors we are introduced to what some would call the real threat of this post apocalyptic world, people. As the show began season 1 and it followed the comic pretty well we were introduced to living breathing characters from the comic, with some new characters along the way. Season 1 only having 6 episodes came and went quickly, leaving everyone wanting more. As the old adage goes, always leave them wanting more, and this show did that in spades.
This also began my enjoyment of collecting walking dead merchandise and memorabilia, from action figures, comics, magazines, and anything I could find tied in with The Walking Dead(TWD).
Going back to my lifelong interest in makeup and fx I also created some Halloween makeups of walkers, once taking on the htought of making myself into the bloated well walker. Sculpting the whole over the head cowl only to find out it could not fit the molds into my oven, oops. I then resorted to shaving my head and beard and making just a face prosthetic and had used a long sleeve t-shirt covered in carved foam and latex skins to make my already corpulent form just a little bit bigger yet.
As the seasons progressed and some people would fall off watching the show my love of this adventure continued. Was I disapointed at time? yes, but that's going to happen when you become invested in characters and they end up dying some gruesome horrific magnificent death, and possibly return to torment the survivors.
Favorite character? well this is a hard question, and here's why. On first watch through I was ok with Daryl Dixon as a character, but on second and many more watch throughs, I realized how much of a protector he really was and loved the character even more. Rick Grimes? sure he was great, Carol became the bad ass chameleon who could adapt to her environment. One minute she was hacking away at walkers and bad guys, and the next she was making cookies...and maybe threatening little kids if they told on her.
More to come...
